How To Stop Your Air Conditioner From Freezing Up

!±8± How To Stop Your Air Conditioner From Freezing Up

Scenario:

My air conditioner is freezing up almost daily. I've tried resetting the temperature and nothing seems to work. What would you suggest I to to stop my air conditioner from freezing?

Solution:

There are several factors that could be the cause. The four main reasons for air conditioner freeze ups:

Refrigerant charge

Outdoor temperature

Insufficient air flow

Defective blower

You may have a low refrigerant charge which can cause the air conditioner to freeze up. The system needs to be charged correctly to enable it to work properly. You may have a leak in the refrigerant lines.

If the lines have been vibrating or rubbing other parts or objects the friction could cause a leak. In addition if there are loose fittings or weak solder joints it could be leaking from those areas. If you've determined the refrigerant lines are not leaking than it may just need to be recharged. If you don't know how to recharge it you may need to contact a service technician.

In temperatures under 60 degrees outdoor air conditioning units tend not to function as well. When the temperature drops the system begins to not function properly and freeze ups can occur. The simplest method is to not use your unit when the temperature cools down and open your windows or doors. If that's not a option you will probably need to have a ambient temperature control installed in your system.

The evaporator coils will become dirty over time. A dirty filter restricts the air flow making it lose air flow and eventually it becomes so slow that it freezes up, or at best, not cooling as well as it should. This results in dirty coils that will need to be cleaned. Depending on your air conditioner you may have to remove the coils to clean them. You should replace the AC filter yearly. For central air conditioning units another problem that occurs is when you have duct work that is undersized causing the unit to freeze up. If you feel that may be the problem you'll need to consult a professional. Try replacing the filter first and it may do the trick.
Air conditioner freeze ups can occur when the blower is not running at the required speed and may need to be replaced.

These are the main reasons why air conditioners freeze up. If you're lucky it may just be a dirty filter which you should be able to replace yourself.

Top 5 Furnaces

!±8± Top 5 Furnaces

As a heating and air conditioning professional i am consistently asked by homeowners what brand is the best. I have worked on every brand out there, and installed most of them as well. In my experience the following makes the brand on a furnace less important:

a) Every manufacturer subs out the manufacture of most parts you find in a furnace. For example; no brand stamps out their own circuit boards. They tell White Rogers what they want to relays to do and White Rogers makes the board. In essence; no matter the brand, White rogers makes the circuit boards. This is true with many parts inside a furnace, with varying manufacturers making the different components that go into a furnace.

b) Furnace manufactures copy designs from each other. If say, Coleman comes out with a feature on their furnace it won't be long until every other manufacturer does the same.

c) All furnace manufacturers carry the same parts warranties on their products. Again if Coleman has a 10 year parts warranty, all the other brands will as well.

d) 99% of all customer complaints are do to the quality of installation and not to manufacturer defects. Most of the time the homeowner will not even know this because their installer will blame all homeowner issues on a bad product, not on their own installation.

So with that said here are my favorite brands from my experience as a repair and install technician. the criteria i use is number of repairs, ease of repairs, cost of doing the repairs, installation costs and number of consumer options.

1) Coleman.

They make a solid long lasting furnace at a reasonable price point. Supply houses for parts are plentiful and everyone can work on them.

2) Trane/American standard.

Though Trane had some Circuit board issues in the past, their current furnaces are well built. Most technicians are familiar with them and repair parts are fairly easy to get.

3) Carrier/Payne/Bryant.

Carrier brands had a run of bad heat exchangers thru the 90s and early 2000s. They have learned from the mistakes and currently make a good product. Their repair costs are a little higher than the others, and again most techs can work on them easy enough.

4) Rheem

Rheem has a decent product at a fairly good price point. Regular maintenance is important as Rheem furnaces seem to need more repairs than the other brands, their parts are easy to get and the repairs are not overly expensive.

5) Lennox

Lennox makes a high quality product. they are the most expensive to install and repair. Few techs are familiar with the Lennox product, so repairs often take longer and are more expensive.

Simple Home Air Conditioning Repair: Replacing Filters

!±8± Simple Home Air Conditioning Repair: Replacing Filters

A common home air conditioning repair can include even the simple task of replacing the filters of a cooling unit. This maintenance will not only improve the performance and efficiency of the air conditioner, but it will also prolong its life. Changing the filters of an air conditioner or heater is part of the routine maintenance that needs to be done as often as possible. You can opt to do the task on your own or you can hire professionals, like the Home AC Repair Atlanta, to do it for you.

When you replace the filter of your air conditioning unit, you also clean away dirt, dust and grime that block airflow and can ruin the evaporator coil of the unit. This coil is the part that absorbs heat, so it should be functioning properly in order to prevent problems with your compressor and fans. Replacing the filters of heaters and air conditioners is one of the easiest things to do when it comes to air conditioning or heater tune-up. If you follow the manual instructions provided by your manufacturer, you can perform this task hassle free.

First, you have to locate the filter of your unit. You can find it somewhere along the duct that returns air from the house to the cooling or heating unit. Filters can be located in the unit itself or in the walls, ceiling or furnaces. You should detach the filter and identify its type. You will need this information in buying the correct replacement filter for the unit.

You must know that different air conditioning filters use different methods of filtration to clean the air. The less expensive kinds use fine coating around fiberglass strands or folded paper pleats. The more costly type uses reusable filters with electrostatic charge to filter the air. Aside from the cost, the difference is that expensive ones can be cleaned and does not need replacement, while the cheaper ones should be regularly replaced. Once you have the right type of filter for your unit, you can just easily install it back into your air conditioner. Then, you are now assured that your AC or heating unit will be back to its optimal performance once again.

A Modulating Boiler Can Give You More Than Just Energy Savings

!±8± A Modulating Boiler Can Give You More Than Just Energy Savings

You're looking to install a new hot water boiler or replace your existing boiler. You come across something called a "modulating" boiler. You wonder what on earth that means. I will attempt to explain some of the features of a modulating boiler.

How nice would it be if you could have your boiler make just enough heat to keep your house warm and nothing more? Your thermostat tells your boiler that you need heat in the house. The boiler starts up and heats the water that runs through the pipes to heat your house. The water does not heat up to temperatures that are more than just warm. But you notice that the temperature in your house is staying right where you want it to be.

This boiler is no ordinary boiler. It knows what the temperature is outside and varies your water temperature to make just the heat needed to keep you comfortable. The heater also runs much more then a normal boiler would but you can see by your gas bill that you are getting great efficiency from this thing.

The feature that makes this wonder so great is that it has the ability to vary the fire that heats the water up and down so that the water temperature stays precisely where the computer brain in the boiler wants it to be. This temperature is figured by measuring the outdoor temperature and changing the water temperature based on that. The colder the weather is outside, the hotter the water is going through your system.

With a system like this you will notice that your heat will run longer and still not cost anymore money. This makes you more comfortable. The modulating boiler will give you just enough heat to keep you warm without wasting much of the heat that a normal boiler would. This type of furnace will give you the most efficient heating possible on any given day.

Before buying a new heating system or replacing your old hot water boiler make sure that you check into a system that will modulate the fire and also vary your heating water temperatures according to the outdoor temperatures. This will save you money and give you a very comfortable heating system.

Compare Gas Furnaces For Their Efficiency and Cost

!±8± Compare Gas Furnaces For Their Efficiency and Cost

There are several troubling trends for me this year. The first is the state of our economy and the lack of control I feel about many daily decisions I need to make. People all over my community are losing their jobs, losing their homes, etc... It's a frightening and uncertain time for most people. I am worried about the upcoming Winter months as I need a new heating system for my home. I need to do some comparison shopping by searching online for compare gas furnaces as the keyword phrase. Last Spring would have been a more reasonable time to start all of this, but there were just too many other things needing my attention.

I want to be an informed consumer. I need to learn about how one goes about becoming this. I did go online and got a sense of the categories people focus on when trying to cost compare gas furnaces. They look at reviews by satisfied and not-so-satisfied customers. They review what heating engineers have to say about a particular product line such as Trane or Goodman. The topic of Warranty Coverage is getting a lot of focus when it comes to the purchase of high efficiency gas furnaces. A lot of money can be saved by first comparing the warranties between gas furnace manufacturers. Another focus seems to be on whether or not significant savings can be had by avoiding the purchase of a heating system with a standing pilot flame. Apparently, one can save as much as 12% on their annual total fuel costs by avoiding this kind of system. In it's place, one could consider purchasing a two-stage gas furnace with a "closed" combustion chamber.

Now, I feel better prepared to select a new furnace system. I have more information to work with on how to compare gas furnaces. I have made an appointment with my local credit union for some financial assistance. One positive thing is that there are funds available for the purchase of energy efficient products.

Hate High Humidity? How to Get the Best Price on Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier - FAD704TDP

!±8± Hate High Humidity? How to Get the Best Price on Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier - FAD704TDP

Want to find the best price on Frigidaire 70 pint dehumidifier model number FAD704TDP?

You're not alone in wanting to buy a dehumidifier to beat the sticky, sodden heat of mid-summer or the especially wet, damp conditions in your area at any time of the year. Read through this article to find out how to get a great deal on this in-demand product now, as well as some information on why air conditioning alone is not a solution to high humidity.

Why using an air conditioner alone is NOT a great solution to high humidity:

Many folks mistakenly believe that setting the air conditioning thermostat lower is the answer to high humidity woes. Perhaps the cooler air does feel more comfortable, but simply lowering the thermostat does not reduce moisture. Three negative effects of using an air conditioner in an attempt to control humidity levels are:

Relative indoor humidity levels generally increase with the use of an air conditioner. As the construction elements in your home become cooler - things like the walls, floors, and ceilings - condensation can occur, increasing the moisture inside the house. The newer energy-efficient air conditioning units typically found in homes today cycle on and off much too quickly to effectively reduce moisture. To sum this up, use of an air conditioner for the purpose of humidity control can be ineffective and even counterproductive, and can result in unnecessarily higher overall energy costs.

The job of dehumidifying a home is best left to an energy star complaint appliance made for that purpose like the FAD704TDP 70 pint dehumidifier. A large capacity dehumidifier like this one can remove enough water from the air in one 24 hour period to make a noticeable difference in moisture levels in your home. Depending on the area needing attention, smaller units like the 25 pint or 50 pint models may also work well.

So how do you get the best price on Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier when demand is at its peak for these units?

It's easy to get a great deal on one of these dehumidifiers if you know where to look.

On the other hand, it can be a time consuming task if you must start your online search from scratch. Because so many people are looking for these on the internet, many stores offer them for sale, though not all the prices and terms, like prices for shipping and return policies, are the same.

In fact, shipping for a dehumidifier can run up to 30% or more of the original purchase price, making what starts out looking like a great bargain not so great a deal after all. You'll need to search through all of the sites carefully and pay close attention to all of the variables in order to find the best price when all of the costs are taken into consideration.
